I haven't played through it much but all I know is that I hate overly dark levels. Like Yoshi said, at least put the flashlight on the damn gun. Overly dark levels make the game unplayable to me cause you want to just turn up your brightness and contrast until you can actually see where you're going...

It also had to do with keeping cheap labor for growing cotton and tobacco. The cash crops and only real source of income for the South back then. What was that cheap source of labor, slaves.
