Re: Free will versus Determinism
One view I've taken from this (well the first few posts) is that the "universe" approach fails to actually take all variables into account. IF you could conceivably map out every variable that would affect an outcome of an event, you still have no method of determining the outcome of a RAT...

Re: Religion in the USA
Your reason bares no relevance here. Bow before the might of the FSM and pray that he may reach down from on high and touch you with his noodle-y appendage.

Re: How schools celebrate racism
From what I've actually seen in London and surrounding areas, racism against blacks and other minorities rivals that of the most backwoods, redneck US town. I've seen open hostilities back and forth, based solely on the color of skin. True, its not governmentally supported like it was in the US back...

It all depends, you technically pose two questions... 1. If you, dear reader, were provided with documented scientific evidence that altruism was an inherent part of human evolution, to the point that it was literally expressed on a biological level, would that be sufficient to cause you to abandone...

Things like water and air are essentially impossible to claim ownership on given our current level of technology. It isn't feasible at this time to track every molecule of water or air from its originating source, through its various stages, and then to its consumption. Perhaps at some time in the ...

Thanks Ara, I guess more than anything I'd be looking for that ideal government that doesn't really exist out there lol. Not many places a captialist/objectivist can find freedom these days. It would be one thing to stay here if the people opposed the socialism being suggested by most of the candida...

Iceland?
I'm at work so my ability to research this is limited at the moment...but does anyone have an knowledge of the government system in Iceland? Are we talking democracy? This will sound a bit odd probably, but depending on how the 2008 election and first 100 days go...I may be looking for a rather scen...

If I'm a medical doctor, I have a vested interest in having injured people around me - if no one is sick, then I have no business. Perhaps I would be tempted to harm others in order to make sure I had a steady supply of patients. That seems to be obviously in my interest. Practicing medicine for pa...

Being forced to talk to someone you disagree with, in good faith? - sorry, that's not my definition of force. I think this is where you're getting off what Olek is trying to say... You're implying that all force must be physical and physically damaging. But even in your own sentence you use the wor...

But look at your example. You personally know that he would use the money to get back on his feet and keep growing and being productive, you aren't relying on blind faith or hope that he will. In this case, your charity is because you hold value in him as a friend. His happiness and success are impo...

I don't consider gift giving at Christmas charity, as its done with an intended result of showing love and affection for family members...but at the same time its not expected from anyone nor do I feel that I get nothing in return. Exactly, the common moray is that gift giving at the darkest part o...

Charity is not a virtue, but it is not wrong as long as it is not seen as a virtue. One can still value something enough to donate to i This isn't really an argument though, as you have to see what this statement means in other contexts. You're still advocating giving something for nothing, but try...

I think the slope around giving charity is a very slippery one. The act itself, giving someone something that was not earned with no expectation of personal or productive return, does violate the base values of Objectivism. Take Hurricane Katrina relief funds and charities as one example. While the ...
