A Canadian lawyer who represented a man convicted of murdering a policeman has apologised for singing "I Shot The Sheriff" as he left the courtroom.
Christian Gauthier was heard singing the words of the Bob Marley tune during a break in the trial of his client, Stephane Boucher.
Boucher was later sentenced to 25 years for shooting and killing policeman Benoit L'Ecuyer in Montreal.
He was overheard by reporters and police as he sang: "I shot the sheriff, but I swear it was in self-defence."
"It's the story of my client," he told a journalist who warned him that his performance had been recorded on tape.
Boucher had argued that he killed the police officer in self-defence after he was shot at while trying to escape.
Formal complaint
Mr Gauthier later admitted making an error of judgement, saying he regretted the fact that police and relatives of the victim had heard him.
He told Canadian television: "If I hurt them, if I added to their plight, I'm sincerely sorry. I didn't think about it, and if I had, I wouldn't have sung."
But his apology failed to satisfy the Quebec Law Society, which has begun a disciplinary investigation into his conduct.
The Montreal police union has also lodged a formal complaint against Mr Gauthier.
If the investigation goes against Mr Gauthier, he could face a fine or even be barred from practising law.
