My Complaint Letter to My College

Post by Oleksandr »

I have recently saw another same old brainwashing on one of web pages of my college, and finally got fed up, and sent a complaint letter.

I'm reprinting it here.
Me wrote:To whomever this concerns,

I'm deeply offended by a quote shown on the main web page of University of Louisville Libraries.
I have taken a screen shot and uploaded it to my web space at UofL.
This quote was present there as of Sunday, March 24, 2008.
http://library.uofl.edu/

http://ox.slug.louisville.edu/~o0lozi01 ... _quote.png

If you look at bottom right corner, you will find a quote that reads:

"as long as you find a group of people that are deprived... that don’t have the opportunity for education... for a job... you’re going to have the people who will destroy, the people who will loot, and the people who say to themselves, ‘well, I'm gonna have some of the worlds goods."

This quote implies that a person, to whom a job was denied, is almost morally justified to resort to force.
I was recently denied a position at Microsoft, because they thought they could find a better candidate than me.
I am an international student, and United States government restricts my individual rights by not allowing me to freely accept job offers from American businesses. And their only "justification" is that I didn't happen to have been born on US soil.
However, I did not resort to force, and in my view, it would be utterly immoral for me to use force.

Martin Luther King said himself that one shouldn't use force to resolve problems.

I was led to believe that the University of Louisville does not promote violence and using force to resolve problems.

So, how come your main library web page shows a radically different view?
Is this something endorsed by UofL?
Is such quote really represents what UofL is all about?

I'm highly offended by the above quote. I think it spits in the face of every just moral person who realizes that using force to solve problems is immoral.

I hope the quote is taken down from a public website of public organization such as University of Louisville.

Thanks you,

Oleksandr

Looks like the letter worked. Cause your library link does not have any quotes on the main page for me.

EDIT: Whoops...looks like my browser was blocking the javascript on the page. Quote is still there.

I think the only thing the quote is trying to say is that poverty breeds crime. Although I can understand the point of view trying to say that it implies it's morally justifiable, I just can't see that being the intent of what was trying to be said.

Francisco says to Jim Taggart, "Sooner or later, Jim, you will have to learn that words do have a meaning".

Whether it was their intention or not, it still says it. It also happens to negate free will, saying that poverty has to bring crime, so it is morally justifiable. Because if something is a biological fact (not based on ones own free will) then it can't be immoral. I know it doesn't say it explicitly, but the fact that the statement is focusing on it shows its intention. There is no reason to bring it up in the first place if not to try to create some type of pity.

Well, going by the statement, I'm the perfect person. I have 2 jobs and go to college! That means there's no evil thoughts in me at all, like wanting to slash the tires of the person who cut me off this morning.

I'd say there's still plenty of reason to bring it up. It really only makes good logical sense that the lack of ability to get a good job would make lucrative illegal activities more attractive. I think to state it as a biological fact is certainly a bit overdone, but from a self-interested viewpoint, it seems to be trying to tell me that the benefit of reduced crime is worth an investment in the education of others. Whether that's true or not, I don't really know, but it certainly seems like a fair statement to make.

I'd say that, morally, we owe them nothing, and they have no moral means to harm another. I submit that it is just a better implementation of justice that is needed. Men have freewill; denying that, I think, is just giving up, and creating excuses (I'm not saying you are).

An interesting thing I just thought of:

I wonder if the welfare state, in their act of forcing money from those that succeed, actually makes the poor more violent. Would the government doing force for them through entitlements actually make them think they can get away with force themselves? "Government only gives enough to give a crappy life. I'm being taking advantage of, people owe me more."

Interesting.
