If we are a product of our surroundings and have evolved from Earth itself, why do we like to wear clothes?
If we wear clothes because we wish protection from the elements, why then over thousands and thousands of years have we not yet adapted to the environment that supposedly formed us?
The Ice Age might have created the need for clothes, but then why do those who lived at or near the equator insist on clothing their bottoms, at least, even though there is no physical need for that? Further, those clothes seem to contribute to their discomfort in the heat.
Why Wear Clothes?
People in warmer climates wear less clothes, tribal societies barely anything at all. As to the question of why even the most primative societies often (some do often run around naked) continue to wear clothes on their 'bottoms', this is the answer...
Men, have large willies, have you seen those pics in national geographic? Those large willies get in the way when youre running after gazelle. So they have to be tied up, as often the loin cloth resembles nothing more than a string bikini. This is the main reason why women don't often hunt, a bra is much more difficult to develop with primative materials.
Then there is the pee factor, people pee, women too, and the last dribble can trail down your leg if you don't have a loin cloth.
And people sit, on hard things, so they may want a little protection for their hinies when they sit on a rock, tree stump or ant hill...so for hygien reasons, people dont want pee runing down their leg or strange creatures and bacteria running up it.
We dont really need clothes ofcourse, evolution has provided that we have evolved befitting our surroundings, at least in regards to equatorial regions. According to evolution, our physical bodies are perfectly attuned to our surroundings, but chances are, evolution is not at all disturbed that people die before 30 years of age either, without clothes or hygien.

well said. I've heard somewhere that ppl can thrive in extremely cold environments with little clothing/protection. I believe the story went somehting like this: a European explore docks his ship near the southern most most tip of South America in a blizzard. He leads his crew to a village near by. He writes of his astonishment as a woman is nursing her naked babe in the blizzard huddled around a group of natives...

IF you harken back to religious believes, then it has to do with a sense of morality. Because not everybody has this belief structure, it would be my belief that it is not neccessarily protection from cold, but merely the nature of our work neccesitates clothing in many environments. Whether construction and falling debris or in an office and hot coffee, I'm sure glad I'm covered up.

Well, i would like to suggest that clothes were the adaption, except since we evolved intellegence, we were able to make the adaption ourselves instead of waiting for evolution. In this way, we probally have not evolved the way that we would have if humans never started to wear clothing or made tools
unrelated note:
My sig should probally be changed since i'm retired

Re: Why Wear Clothes?
You beat me to the punch. Remember that even though we are human we are still part of nature and our actions are natural. Think of non-human adaptation as passive evolution (this is not always true) and human adaptation as active evolution. I love the natural verse man made debate, they always forget that man is natural and so to are his products.tandar wrote:Golda wrote: If we wear clothes because we wish protection from the elements, why then over thousands and thousands of years have we not yet adapted to the environment that supposedly formed us?
