Introduction for Atlass Rand

Hello Everyone,
I am a new player to EVE, with your website being a major selling point for me. I have read Atlas Shrugged and am most of the way through the Fountainhead, but got distracted finishing up my thesis in computer engineering. I don't know much about the game play yet, but right now I think I would like to concentrate on mining, though I am open to other idea.
