Oh, did you think NASA was about US space program or at least wasting US dollars on US space "image?" Not anymore.
http://theweek.com/article/index/204685 ... im-mission In an recent interview with al-Jazeera, NASA administrator Charles Bolden said President Barack Obama has asked the space agency to "reach out" to "dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science."
Forget Space and US glory, the time has come to lick the boot and try not to offend whoever wishes to get offended by your exitense.

It's amazing to me that we can have an example of how competition prevailed in the advancement of science and space travel 53 years ago when it was US vs Russia in a "space race". At a time when we should be smarter than we were 50+ years ago when color television and contact lenses were unimaginable much less a cellular phone, society has deemed a return to the dark ages through pandering to irrational fears (much the same as the 1600's fear of the unknown and religious zealotry).
I don't think it's to stave off offense rather an innate fear of reprisal for achievement. Being better than everyone else has turned from a virtue of mankind to a sin in such a short amount of time (in regards to this matter). As much as I Disliked Eisenhower's domestic policies and expansions of social programs within the US he had balls in regards to foreign threats, (well besides overthrowing Iran's first democratically elected president but that's a different matter). Anyways, I would love to see a return of men, not these sissy rainbow chasing feeling sharing hippies.
Hopefully the private sector can gain control of a majority of space exploration without government interference and maybe, just maybe, we can see a return to the greatness of potential space exploration.
Everything else that is wrong with that article will have to be addressed at another time, it is just morally reprehensible on far too many levels.

As someone that works with NASA on every launch (my company transfers all of the high speed film that they shoot of each launch to HD for archival and (as needed) trouble shooting) I can tell you that many of the engineers that work for NASA are disgusted with NASA.
They are a government funded institution and as a result they are worthless, with much of the ample administrative positions bowing to the whip of the politicians for fear of being shut down completely and tossed out into the private sector to starve. They have no drive, no fire to fuel them and so slowly down the funnel they drain....
