2012 myth or a serious issue?

Post by Jenkouk »

ok so we have all seen the diaster film "2012"(maybe not everyone but you are all aware of it) well that sparked choas on the internet with rumours and theories being thrown about like a basketball around the world.

some of these thoeries consisted of the ground simply falling away and subsiding into the ocean, yellowstone national park erupting wiping out majority of the states and of course the dreaded planet X or planet nibriu as its better known as.

a quick history lesson on planet nibriu, back in 1995 a lady called nacy lieder proposed the idea of the new planet in the far reaches of our solar system was on course to hit us, the planet is on a very narrow path where it goes past pluto in the darkest parts of space, and then comes back surpassing all the planets in our solar system to then glide round the sun starting all over again.....this taking 4000 years, well its on its way back in and we are in its way meaning a collision would mean certain death(this thing is big)

NASA have denied its existance and have been very uptight over the subject, many believe they are doing this to avoid world wide panic others believe theres nothing coming and NASA are telling the truth. the current location in meant to be in the inner part of the solar system meaning its visable to the naked eye just like saturn mars and juipter are to us now........but where is it!!!

now the date of this collision is 21st of decemeber 2012, i want to know what you guys think on all this nonesense and weather you really think we will still be here come 2013?

As Objectivists we typically don't qualify unfounded fears and superstitions as they are, more oft then not, founded in an emotional environment that lacks rational and reasoned observation. Things like prophecy and portent, carry no validity as it is based in gut feelings and not in intellectual proving. So this topic may not drum up as much consideration. Empirical evidence is a fundamental ground for validation and there is none in myth based things like 2012 mythos. Curiosity about why people buy into things like this is somewhat intriguing but I don't find any reason to take it serious myself.

Lieder has no formal education or training in anything remotely useful and claims to have been abducted by aliens and implanted with a cerebral communications device. She provides zero evidence, scientific or otherwise, for any of her claims. Her first prophecy was that Nibiru (even the planet's name was plagiarized from a slightly less ridiculed "prophet") would destroy Earth in 2003. Apocalyptic prophecy failcascade.

As for the Mayan Long Count calendar debate, the simple fact is that the Mayans (and the Olmec, who were prolly the ones responsible for the calendar) died out before they could make a new one (each one lasts for 5125 years). It would kind of be like if the Playboy corporation went bankrupt and failed to bring out a 2012 Playmate calendar. Does that mean the world would end in 2012? No. It means you need to make a new calendar.

I'm with Grustar on this one. To me that sounds like the very definition of the end of the world.
