From a Statistical perpective,

1 Standard Deviation = ~68% of occurence
2 Standard Deviation = ~95% of occurence
3 Standard Deviation = ~99% of occurence

So where a given occurence happens in terms of Standard Deviation can help determine how 'improbable' something is ...
