Potential EvE email Scam

Post by redhotrebel »

So I just got an email saying:
You have chosen to transfer your character to the account named wildimp.

We are currently processing this transfer. The character you are transferring will remain on your account, but will not be playable during this time. You will need to complete the transfer after 7:51 AM on 03/23/2011.

To complete the transfer, log in to Account Management.

If you did not initiate this character transfer, please file a petition to Customer Support and do not complete the transfer.

If you have any questions, you may browse the EVE Knowledgebase or email support@eve-online.com and one of our customer support representatives will be happy to assist you.
The links don't go to eveonline rather a spoof link that looks decievingly similar to the real site: eveonline. notlong.com (http: //213.34.192.46/http/ secure.eveonline.com/login.aspxReturnUrl2fAccountManMenu.aspx3faid3d103543aid193543.htm)

My assumption is it is a phishing scam- I have notified CCP but please be careful- If you get this make sure to NOT follow the email links but to be cautious type in the real eve website and change your passwords-- once again DO NOT FOLLOW THE EMAIL LINK.

THIS IS WHAT YOUR EMAIL SHOULD LOOK LIKE:

Note that it has the name of the toon and does not require any action unless you want to stop the transaction.
Another player is transferring the character (character name) to your account named (your account name here).

We are currently processing this transfer. The character you are transferring will remain on the sender account, but will not be playable until the transfer automatically completes.

If you are not the intended recipient of this character or are not expecting to receive a character, please file a petition to Customer Support.

If you have any questions, you may browse the EVE Knowledgebase or email support@eve-online.com and one of our customer support representatives will be happy to assist you.

Greetings, I am GM Cid

This mail is actually not from us, but is rather a phishing mail, sent by hackers.

If you followed the link sent in the mail, I would strongly advise you to scan your computer for a keylogger or other form of spyware.

http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.free-av.com/

Use all these scanners, as not all of them may be picking up the latest keyloggers, but one of them at least should.

Afterward, change the passwords to your email address and any other online accounts you have.

Best regards,
GM Cid
