New player looking for information

TTI is known for its intellectuals. This is a place for thinkers to gather and exchange quotes, thoughts, or other topics that might not appeal to the average gamer.

New player looking for information

Post by zapitino »

I am new to Eve, and am not sure in what direction I will head, but from the little I've read about T.T., my interest in the corporation is piqued. I have been playing Eve less than a month (14 day free trial, plus about 14 days of paid participation). Currently, I am operating a small independent mining operation, earning a little more than a million ISK daily with about 2 to 3 hours play time. I don't have any idea if this is poor, average, or good, just a reflection of what I am doing. I am a veteran of Lineage II, the only other online game I've participated in. I am dropping that account in favor of Eve. As i'm not sure exactly what a corporation does, I thought more information would be helpful.

A little more about me. I'm retired military. My military service entailed 8 years in the Air Force, '63-'71, including a tour in Vietnam, a 14+ year break in service, then a return to active service in the military, this time as a recruiter for the Army National Guard. I retired as a Sergeant First Class, proud that in almost 13 years as a recruiter, I had only one complaint of recruiter malpractice (from the mother of one of my recruits, not from the recruit himself). The complaint was unfounded. Units I recruited for have been deployed to Afghanistan & Iraq, which makes our involvement in both of these nations a very personal one.

I am probably a bit older than most (I will turn 61 the first week of August this year). I attended San Diego State University from '71-'76, ending up with a degree in Business (Marketing) and a minor in Industrial Psychology (probably called Psychology of Human Resources or some such these days). I've been married twice, the first marrige lasting 19 years, my current marriage in it's 17th year. I have 5 children (3 mine, 2 my wife's), and 11 grandchildren. My son's wife is expecting in January, and his oldest daughter is expecting in September.

I started reading Ayn Rand as a young teenager (13 or 14, as I recall), and although I can't remember a lot of the details, I do recall how satisfying they were. In fact, I can only remember the titles of two of her books, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but my memory says I read more. I do though feel confident that a lot of my political philosophy was given it's basis in those books.

Did I mention that I tend to get wordy? Sorry about that, I intended to merely ask for some more information and got a bit carried away.

This is also mainly the text of the email I sent, and am looking forward to a reply.

Welcome Zapitino, you’re not the only old guy playing Eve. I am forty-one. I know quite a few old guys in game. Eve seems to attract the cerebral.

I share something else in common with you besides age, I am a third generation San Diegan with BS in Chemistry and MBA in Information Decision Systems (Applied Statistics) from SDSU. Though I attended 20 years after you did, I am sure the women were just as good looking when you attended!

I hope you enjoy the game, it is very complex. If you want to stay in touch there is a “Taggart” public chat channel. Many of the current and former TTIers keep this channel open while they are playing.

A fellow Aztec! What a nice surprise. Actually, I lived in Vista & commuted for 5 years. I started classes at SDSU less than a week after my return from Vietnam, and as I had spent most of the 60's in the military, was a little shocked at the underwear choices (or lack thereof) of many of the women. This was also part of the "streaking" era -- 30 or 40 young California girls running nude across campus was pretty interesting. Come to think of it, so was Black's Beach...

By the way, I am a native of Pasadena, although I haven't lived in California for almost 30 years now.

Woot ! Now that's what I call a welcome home!

Black's is still swim suit optional, but the streaking has pretty much come to an end. Although the COEDs' clothing doesn't require too much imagination these days.

I forgot to ask this. how do you find the "Taggart" public chat channel in game? I searched through the "channels & mailinglists" tab to no avail. I know I must be missing something, just not sure what.

Thank you, although I feel a little foolish for missing the obvious.
