New player looking for information

I am new to Eve, and am not sure in what direction I will head, but from the little I've read about T.T., my interest in the corporation is piqued. I have been playing Eve less than a month (14 day free trial, plus about 14 days of paid participation). Currently, I am operating a small independent mining operation, earning a little more than a million ISK daily with about 2 to 3 hours play time. I don't have any idea if this is poor, average, or good, just a reflection of what I am doing. I am a veteran of Lineage II, the only other online game I've participated in. I am dropping that account in favor of Eve. As i'm not sure exactly what a corporation does, I thought more information would be helpful.
A little more about me. I'm retired military. My military service entailed 8 years in the Air Force, '63-'71, including a tour in Vietnam, a 14+ year break in service, then a return to active service in the military, this time as a recruiter for the Army National Guard. I retired as a Sergeant First Class, proud that in almost 13 years as a recruiter, I had only one complaint of recruiter malpractice (from the mother of one of my recruits, not from the recruit himself). The complaint was unfounded. Units I recruited for have been deployed to Afghanistan & Iraq, which makes our involvement in both of these nations a very personal one.
I am probably a bit older than most (I will turn 61 the first week of August this year). I attended San Diego State University from '71-'76, ending up with a degree in Business (Marketing) and a minor in Industrial Psychology (probably called Psychology of Human Resources or some such these days). I've been married twice, the first marrige lasting 19 years, my current marriage in it's 17th year. I have 5 children (3 mine, 2 my wife's), and 11 grandchildren. My son's wife is expecting in January, and his oldest daughter is expecting in September.
I started reading Ayn Rand as a young teenager (13 or 14, as I recall), and although I can't remember a lot of the details, I do recall how satisfying they were. In fact, I can only remember the titles of two of her books, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but my memory says I read more. I do though feel confident that a lot of my political philosophy was given it's basis in those books.
Did I mention that I tend to get wordy? Sorry about that, I intended to merely ask for some more information and got a bit carried away.
This is also mainly the text of the email I sent, and am looking forward to a reply.
